As most of you may know my platform is the importance of senior citizens, I have changed it due to sudden changes in my life. My platform is now depression, someone who is very close to me is now battling depression and I feel it is very important that we raise awareness for this mental illness because I have seen it first hand how it affects people. So I am dedicating my platform to that someone and everyone who is battling depression all over the world.
Depression is a medical condition with many emotional, physical, behavioral, and cognitive symptoms. Its not a temporary change in mood or a sign of weakness, it isn’t inevitable and it isn’t a character flaw. Many people that are depressed often hide their emotions and are too afraid to ask for help and many suffer in silence. Depression hurts about 1 in 10 Canadians, who will experience a major depressive episode during their lifetime. Did you know Depression is the leading causes of disability worldwide? and that women are more likely to experience depression than men? Many people are unaware of how common this illness is because they don’t seek treatment because they are scared of what others will think.
Many people don’t understand that they can help people that are depressed. There is many ways that you can help someone who is going through depression. You can easily offer them your support, you can help them do day-to-day things that they would normally do alone like prepare a meal, and going to extracurricular activities etc. You can also support them emotionally, you can call them to see how everything is going, and you can find so many other ways to support them as it helps them feel better.
If you are or know someone who is depressed do something about it. It is time to stand up and move forward. You are much stronger than you think.
